One of the trends that has characterized scientific development over the decades has been mankind's ability to work at increasing levels of detail. While a millimeter is small at one thousandth of a meter, it is hard to imagine a micrometer -- one millionth of a meter -- and almost impossible to imagine a nanometer, which is one billionth of a meter. an example of nanometers in action is that data on a DVD is stored as indentations that are around 100 nm deep by 400 nm wide. These are requirements for SSRF.
