Data Management & Data Analytics | Power

Overcome challenges across your fleet. And improve reliability, availability, and efficiency. Overcoming challenges and improving operations begins with understanding your data. You need to capture, store, contextualize, and visualize real-time information—and make it available to the right people at the right time to enable the right decisions.

Optimize equipment health

GE has a full suite of advanced, proven, and integrated data management and data analytics software products, starting with the Proficy Historian and including GE's patent-protected Proficy SmartSignal predictive analytics and diagnostics. With GE software, everybody in the decision-making process—engineering, operations, C-level, and more—can have access to the specific, role-based information they need to do their jobs….and optimize every aspect of equipment health.

See it before it happens

With both the right data management foundation and additional monitoring software, our Power Generation customers anticipate impending problems before they happen--across their fleets. They shift from costly reactive maintenance to efficient planned maintenance. They focus on fixing problems, not looking for them. They reduce their maintenance costs while improving reliability and availability. And they prevent unplanned outages and catastrophic failures.

Mike Hartsig | Plant Manager, Griffith Energy (1:32)

Griffith Energy is a 570-megawatt, natural-gas-fueled, combined-cycle plant located 100 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. Mike Hartsig shares how valuable the Proficy SmartSignal software is to the reliability and efficiency of his plant.

GE's Proficy SmartSignal software helps you keep your aging coal assets running efficiently. The software identifies problems early to reduce maintenance costs and help avoid derates, unplanned outages, and lost generation. Learn how two customers benefit from our software.

TransAlta increased its availability to its highest level in history.

Mirant achieved nearly $1 million in value in the first month alone.

Combined Cycle

The GE software provides protection of both steady state and CT starts. The software helps avoid penalties for not starting or for going offline too early; replacement power costs; environmental penalties; and loss of heat rate due to running inefficiently.

The GE software analyzes in real time all the data that is collected by a programmable logic controller in the nacelle--literally tens of thousands of data points daily on a typical wind farm--and does what time-based and traditional condition-based monitoring techniques cannot. The software detects and notifies wind farms of impending problems, helps prioritize tower inspections, and helps optimize crane usage.

The GE software helps keep nuclear plants reliable and safe. In fact, the Proficy SmartSignal software was born when the Dept. of Energy asked researchers at Argonne National Laboratory to develop a better tool for predicting problems at nuclear facilities after the failure of a coolant pump forced an emergency reactor shutdown. Since then, the software has been further developed and is now protected by over forty patents.

The GE software helps you leverage your lean workforce and monitor remote equipment to optimize cost-effective availability.

Monitoring & Diagnostic Center

Some of our Oil & Gas super major customers use our in-house remote monitoring and diagnostic center, the Availability & Performance Center, to provide monitoring services, instead of doing it themselves. We highlight weekly examples of impending problems that the center identifies for these customers in our "Catch of the Week" reports.

Some of our customers want to develop their own monitoring and diagnostics centers to use the GE data analytics software themselves. The Framework for a Centralized Monitoring & Diagnostic Center white paper describes how to go about it.

Catch of the Week

Each "Catch of the Week" reports a problem identified early, its cause, and its value to the customer. Here are a few examples:

Boiler feed pump bearning problem found at Combined Cycle Power Plant

Plugged gas recirculation fan air filter found at Coal Plant

Combustion problem found at Combined Cycle Power Plant

Anticipate problems instead of reacting to them.

Maximize and focus your maintenance resources.

Reduce damage to critical equipment.

Avoid unexpected shutdowns and catastrophic failures.

Standardize across all critical equipment and across the fleet.
